Sequoia cones are a distinctive aquarium botanical valued for both their aesthetic and functional benefits. As they gradually release tannins and humic substances, they help condition the water, gently lowering pH and providing mild antibacterial and antifungal effects. Their intricate structure creates natural hiding spots and foraging areas for fish, shrimps, and other small aquatic organisms, reducing stress and encouraging natural behaviors. Adding botanicals to your aquarium will result in the release of humic substances, which will lower the pH of the aquarium water, act as an antibacterial and antifungal agent, and also lower the heavy metal content of the water. It is widely accepted that it acts as a spawning trigger and can aid in the recovery of any fish damaged through stress or fighting. The leaves will naturally float, but most will sink within 24 hours or so. There are no rules for how much to add, so some care and an element of trial and error based on different leaf types is required.
